"...More than just another cook book; the very names of ingredients will evoke the perfumes and flavors of the Florida Keys for you."
From Key West Cook Book, by The Key West Woman's Club (est. 1915), copyright 1949
At SoFAB, September is Florida Month! Here at SoFAB's John & Bonnie Boyd Hospitality & Culinary Library, we offer a wide-ranging collection of books focused on the cuisines of notable Florida locales, such as the panhandle, the Miami area, and the Keys. For example, the Key West Cook Book, compiled in 1949 by the Key West Woman's Club, is a delightful compendium of recipes for lovers of that delectable mashup of tropical, Southern, and Gulf Coast cuisine.
Divided into eleven chapters (including Appetizers, Soups & Chowders, and Desserts), the Key West Cook Book serves up traditional Key West cuisine in mouth-watering recipes such as Caribbean Chowder, Crawfish Enchilada, Carne Asada, Hopping John, Coconut Meat Loaf, and (of course) Key Lime Pie. The text is handwritten by each contributor and the book contains whimsical black and white artwork depicting the sultry Key West ethos. The island hospitality of the Key West Woman's Club is palpable in the pages of this down-home collection.
Stop by to peruse this or any of the books in our growing collection of culinary books and ephemera. Library hours are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, please call 504-267-7490.
