ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alicia Maher was born and raised in Santa Ana, El Salvador. She is the bilingual author and publisher of Delicious El Salvador: 75 Authentic Recipes for Traditional Salvadoran Cooking, and the Spanish-language edition, El Salvador, Sabores Deliciosos: 75 Recetas Auténticas de la Cocina Tradicional Salvadoreña. Delicious El Salvador was her first cookbook. Alicia’s mission is to preserve, rescue, and document authentic Salvadoran recipes for her children, future generations, and food lovers everywhere.
Alicia Maher is passionate about cooking and is completely in her element in the kitchen. From a young age, Alicia loved to cook and bake in her native El Salvador. With her grandmother, mother, and aunts, she shopped the local markets for fresh ingredients like meats, seafood, vegetables, fruits, spices… Alicia learned how to cook authentic Salvadoran food from the women in her family. They were passionate about Salvadoran food and always enjoyed preparing and sharing their home cooking with family and friends.
In 2014, in Beijing, Delicious El Salvador won the Gourmand Award for Best First Cookbook in the World. Delicious El Salvador also won a Gourmand Award at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2015, for Best First Cookbook of the last 20 years. These are the first international cookbook awards for El Salvador’s traditional home cooking. Alicia has always celebrated and recognized the rich legacy of Salvadoran family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Her translation of Delicious El Salvador, El Salvador, Sabores Deliciosos, was a semi-finalist, category translation, in the 2018 Gourmand awards.
In 2001, Alicia became a partner in the renowned Viktor Benes Continental Bakeries in the Los Angeles area and for eight years devoted substantial time and energy to this wonderful business. Currently, she is writing more cookbooks on Salvadoran food and managing her social media accounts, blog, and website. She teaches cooking lessons from her home and enjoys catering private events and for families.
