Join Hoke Harden for a complete neat tasting and cocktail exploration of this traditional fortified wine from the Charentes region of France. Hoke will showcase the many ways to enjoy this apéritif and underrated cocktail ingredient—with bespoke cocktails created by Tristan Uhl, master cocktailian!—and prove that Pineau des Charentes deserves a place in today's vibrant cocktail culture.
Guests will taste six distinctive expressions of Pineau des Charentes, enjoy three cocktails prepared by the evening's Drinkmaster, and nibble on delicious dishes courtesy KTCHN DTLA, a star of the Arts District, one of Los Angeles's hottest neighborhoods.
Tickets are $40 for National Food & Beverage Foundation (NatFAB) and Bar & Spirits Industry members, $45 General Admission in advance, and $50 at the door (if available). NatFAB membership is available to all at natfab.org/membership.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
An enthusiastic lover of wine and spirits, Hoke Harden left a career in academia to follow his other muse for the last 35 years, trekking around the world to the great producing regions. Recently referred to as a veritable walking omnibus of wine and spirits knowledge, he has experienced every possible facet of the world of wine and spirits as a retailer, restaurateur, bartender, buyer, wholesaler, supplier, marketer, critic, writer, competition judge, and an educator. He is currently with Elixir Vitae Wine & Spirits Consultants, the Taste & Compare Academy of Wine, Spirits, and Food in Portland OR, a writer and blogger, a member of the Society of Wine Educators, Wine & Spirits Instructor at Mt. Hood Community College, a Master Instructor with the French Wine Academy, and a B.N.I.C. Certified Cognac Educator.
ABOUT THE DRINKMASTER
With humble beginnings like most in the industry, Tristan Uhl barbacked at pool halls and dive bars to catch a break. Tending bar was always the means to an end--a full-time student working full-time internships while struggling to pay for Design School while also bartending. Bar owners were always cognizant of the fact that despite the exhaustion, the work ethic was there and eventually, ten years later, the “means to an end” became the end. Having found much more intellectual satiation in studying the origins of spirits and cocktails, Tristan moved from ingenue to heading up bar programs. His resume boasts Seattle icons such as the famous Grunge-era haunt Linda’s Tavern, the Tiki hit Bait Shop, and Pre-Prohibition speakeasy Tommy Gun, and fine dining staples such Intermezzo Carmine. He’s also tended bar internationally for The Red Party with Campari and enjoyed placing third for Best Bartender in The Seattle Times “Best of Seattle” awards in 2014.
Tristan currently is the Los Angeles area Market Specialist for Compass Box Whisky and also Beverage Director and Bar Manager of Resident two years running. With a constant focus on presenting a cocktail menu that pushes the expectations of what a fusion live-music venue and a world class cocktail bar can do, Resident is thriving under his watch. The varied clientele demand a menu that satiates the cocktail aficionado without alienating the average concert-goer. The current menu offers something for every palette: tried-and-trues combined with his riffs on classics, new envisionings of Tiki, and a focus heavily on the support of amaros.
